The Faculty of Medicine is the first - and until now the only - institution at the Charles University practicing gerontology and geriatrics. Its mission is to improve knowledge of and clinical care for the elderly through clinical practice, research and education. Teaching activities cover a broad professional spectrum:
* Undergraduate teaching of geriatrics for medical students * geriatric nursing for students of Baccalaureate Nursing Studies * gerontology for Ergotherapy and Physiotherapy Baccalaureate and Master Degree students * social Gerontology has been introduced in 1992 into the curriculum for medical students.
All courses are taught in Czech and English.
The Department serves also as a Chair of Geriatrics and Gerontology, Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education (IPVZ), Prague - the only institution certified in postgraduate board-certification training, including training courses and fellowships for doctors specialising in geriatric medicine and courses and workshops for Continuing Medical Education (CME) in geriatrics. The Department holds the licence for training in geriatrics of the Czech Chamber of Physicians Since 2001, and the postgraduate doctoral PhD program for research in Gerontology has been introduced jointly by 1st and 2nd Faculties of Medicine at the Charles University in Prague.

Dr. Topinková is a full Professor at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. Currently she is the Director and Chair of Department of Geriatrics at 1st Medical Faculty, Charles University and cross-appointed to Department of Social Medicine and Public Health. She also is appointed as Chair of Department of Geriatrics and Gerontology at Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education in Prague, the national institution for specialist training and fellowships in geriatric medicine and specialist´s board certification.
As a clinician, scientist and lecturer, she has been working in the field of geriatric medicine and gerontology since early 80s. In 1990s she introduced Geriatric Medicine and Social Gerontology into curricula at Charles University Medical School and published the first textbook on geriatric medicine in the Czech language. She is a Czech representative in Geriatric Medicine Section – Medical Specialists of European Union (UEMS) and, more recently member of Steering Committee of European Master Degree in Gerontology. She is actively involved in international aging research (EU funded research projects AD HOC, CLESA) and interRAI. Professor Topinková was nominated as a national expert for 5th Framework Program of European Commission, RTD, Key Action 'Ageing and Disability' and serves as an expert evaluator and reviewer for European Commission research projects. She is a member of Steering group of European Forum on Population Ageing Research Management. She is a Secretary General of the International Association of Gerontology (European Region) (IAG-ER), Scientific secretary of the Czech Society of Gerontology and Geriatrics, Czech Medical Association and member of several international scientific societies (IAG, IPA, ICGPN).
As a researcher she was involved in several international research projects on ethics, resource allocation and aging, health service research in gerontology, epidemiology and clinical geriatrics. In 1993 she joined interRAI and two years later she became full fellow. She conducted first validation of RUG-III classification of residents in nursing homes in Eastern Europe (Czech Republic) and piloted home care and palliative care instruments in her country. Currently she is participating as national co-ordinator in AD HOC project, EC funded interRAI project on HC clients in many European countries.
