Prof O’Neill pursues four related areas of neurosciences research. The research interests are multidisciplinary, with an emphasis on neurovascular disease. Dr O’Neill has developed the first acute stroke service in Ireland and is studying epidemiological, molecular, physiological and rehabilitation aspects of stroke. A particular component of this is oro-pharyngeal dysphagia, and in conjunction with the department of speech and language therapy, we have described dysphagia in two novel syndromes. Dr O’Neill has an active interest in dementia, particularly in the vascular basis of the syndrome. Lastly, neurovascular disease is the most significant cause of reduced mobility and he runs a centre for mobility enhancement, with an academic interest in the older driver.
