The geriatrics and gerontology activities are mainly at the Faculty of Medicine of Padua's University. In the Faculty of Sciences, the Physical Anthropology Unit has been working for years in biology of ageing, biological age determination, relationship between biological and chronological age, both for scientific purposes and for personal identification of human skeletal remains in the archaeological and forensic context. From an anthropological point of view, since ageing is an intrinsic, fundamental aspect of life, most of our understanding about ageing process belongs to natural history itself. Man is only a chapter in the book of history of life: he shares with all organisms a lot of functions and mechanisms. But in man, the interaction between biological and socio-cultural components leads to a particular ecological perspective of ageing. So, the research on the different aspects of ageing in different cultures, especially those of developing countries, collecting cross-sectional information by means of anthropological survey and anthropometric assessment, evaluating age, gender, socio-economic and residence differentials with regards to nutritional status and health, can lead to a better understanding of the biocultural determinants in world-wide elderly.
