The Vrije Universiteit is located in the capital of the Netherlands, and offers one of the few full Gerontological programs in the country. The section Social Gerontology is part of the department of Social Cultural Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit. Two other sections are involded with work and lifecourse and with social change and social conflicts. The section Social Gerontology - together with a number of other departments - runs the Longitudinal Ageing Study Amsterdam LASA .

The departments runs a bachelor curriculum in social cultural sciences, with in de the third year the possibility to focus on ageing. In the Masters programme there are three options to focus on: ageing, work and life course, culture.

Prof. Kees Knipscheer has been active in Gerontology for almost thirty years now, focusing on several fields such as social networks, family carers, intergenerational relations and more recently, early retirement.

He is active in several European initiatives, such as the Family Care programme (EUROFamCare), and the research programme Ageing, Retirement and Health (SHARE). He teaches several courses at the VU in Amsterdam, and chairs the Board of the EuMaG.
